6 weeks off after 15+ years

If you tapered off Suboxone or stopped cold-turkey, how are you now? How did buprenorphine compare to other addiction treatments for you?

6 weeks off after 15+ years

Post by Mr Grapes »

Six weeks since last dose - a lot of “biological adjustments” have been realized... (you can read how I stopped cold-turkey in another post on the topic). Most notable is my “increased regularity” on the bowl movement front (with the risk of TMI it was still noteworthy) and also my appetite has increased ... which may be me trying to use food to replace an “urge” because I am also not drinking nearly as much... but trying to eat more healthy choices at the same time. Finally, I have a lot of “pains” that I have to manage now. Trying to uses some stretches and other techniques to manage these “normal” pains that the bup tended to cover up for all these years.
Do I miss the buprenorphine? Actually, yes - on occasion I think I miss it. For example flew in airplane the other day and I was so uncomfortable in my seat and that used to not be a problem - I would just take a dose before the flight and now I realize how much that did help me. I know over time this will fade and I have to accept life on a different level now in terms of using other methods (besides a pill) to manage my body and “pains”. I also now have episodes of heartburn I didn’t used to have. And horrible insomnia but I think that’s a side effect of the Ibogaine -
But I’m committed to this and I’m going to move forward. I’m 51 - spent half my 30s and all my 40s on the stuff so it was time to move on. I do have some regret about all those years but I intend to just look forward and not dwell on my past decisions. So thankful I was able to do it without any major withdrawals and I’m going to seize the moment!!
I wish all of you the best on your journey... remember the journey IS the destination in life!

Congratulations on a job well done! Being an opiate user for decades changes the way we think. It will take time to adjust to not having it in your life just like any other habit. When I quit smoking it sure took a long time to not think about it. Everyone told me to do it one day at a time and those days add up to years. Same when I quit drinking.

Keep us posted on your progress.
