Worrie mom could use some advice and clearing Reply with quote

Hello my name is Christina I am about 11 in a half weeks along, and very concerned At nine weeks I heard the heart beat which I was told is very good and most likely means you are in the clear. For the first ten weeks I have been taking about 2- 4 mg of the 8 mg kind of suboxen. I then realized that that doctor who was prescribing me the suboxen had told me I need to get an abortion. So I found another doctor who is closer to my house but little more expensive but switched me to subutex 8 mg and told me to talk a half a day well I take a little less then a quarter 2 times because a big quarter size piece makes me feel all icky and I cannot stand that feeling. I started off with this mess because I have a slipped disk in my back and sever pain and was on the 10/325 Norco’s for about 2 years when I went to my doc and said I don’t want to take pills every day he told me Id get sick if I jjust stop taking them so he put me on the suboxen to “wheen” me off well that was almost a year ago and I just don’t want to take this stuff any more. I though about admitting my self to the hospital and doing it that way but what do you recommend?? I also wanted to ask if you know if the subutex if not off by the time I go in to labor does a the epidural effect it? also if i wanted to quit whats the best easiest way to do it and will my baby be ok
Thank you for your time
christina

Hi xtina and welcome. And congrats on your pregnancy. Your new doc did the right thing in switching you to subutex. They do that just because there's no need to throw in another med into the mix while pregnant, not because the naloxone is necessarily dangerous. More like why take a chance.

According to everything I've read and researched, including from Dr. Junig, it's safest to remain on sub for the duration of your pregnancy. To taper or cold turkey off places the fetus at risk of miscarriage. Plus whatever withdrawals you feel, the fetus will as well but by being in the womb, it cannot be treated like you can.

Many, many women have had healthy babies staying on sub and not all babies are born with NAS - many here from the forum did not. And you're on a nice low dose so that helps, too. And no, it will not affect the epidural.

I hope this helps to answer some of your questions.

Hi, first off congratulations and welcome! Sub is very safe during pregnancy and from what I read the chances of your baby being born with withdrawls are quite small. That being said if you want to quit sub while pregnant the only way to do it is a slow, comfortable taper. I would not recommend checking yourself into a hospital to detox. Reason being, is that they can treat your withdrawl systems but not your baby's. Also quitting that rapidly puts a lot of stress on your body and can cause a miscarriage. This is why the only way to stop during pregnancy is a slow comfortable taper, everything you will in way of withdrawls so will your baby and like I said above they can give you meds for comfort but can do nothing to help your baby's suffering. Sub will not affect an epidural at all and if you are still on sub when you deliver the epidural will work just fine. Please read through all the posts in this section, there is a lot of valuable information. Also if you plan to quit read thru the stopping suboxone section as there are tons of good info on how to taper there. If you have any questions please post them, there are some really knowledgeable people here who will help you along the way. Again congratulations on your coming bundle of joy and remember to relax and enjoy your pregnancy, everything will be fine in the end!

Hi Christina and welcome. I was shocked that you were told to get an ABORTION?!? I can't believe a doctor would tell you that. It is completely negligent of him, as there have been several medical studies published on Suboxone/methadone during pregnancy, none of which even SUGGEST that a woman would need to terminate the pregnancy. Good for you going to another doctor and getting a 2nd opinion.
I agree with the above posters that you should read as much as you can of the other threads in the pregnancy section. There have been a lot of women who have had positive outcomes. I wasn't sure what you meant when you said a quarter of the Subutex made you feel icky. Maybe you could say more about that and you could get some feedback.
In the meantime take good care of yourself,
Lilly
